Spanish as a Second Language

The "Spanish as a Second Language" (SSL) department teaches to the needs of each individual learner. Whether it be basic Spanish skills for students who will temporarily be in Costa Rica or preparation for integration into the student's grade level Spanish for long term students, our goal is to help each child develop all skills in Spanish at their own pace.

Each individual curriculum is design to provide opportunities to develop reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Throughout the Elementary, Middle School, and High School, the American International School of Costa Rica offers a multi-level program that challenges all the students whose English is not their native language.  On entry to AIS students must take an English placement test to determine their proficiency level.

The ESL program enables the students to achieve the four language skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking), to demonstrate social and content area competency through the application of critical thinking skills.

Our goals are:

  • To provide a learning environment and curriculum that ensures comprehensive English language learning for each student.

  • Address all the elements of language learning, vocabulary acquisition, all grammar skills, reading comprehension, writing skills, speech, and critical thinking.

  • To provide current, differentiated instruction.

  • To guide the students both academically and socially in a multi-cultural community.

  • To provide students with the best teaching resources and teaching strategies.

  • To challenge each ESL learner to excel and be able to be mainstreamed when all the necessary skills have been acquired.
